Dan from the Free Times emailed me back and totally pawned me off to the music editor who seems very cool. Dan’s too busy for me- I think the Free Times has become The Economist. I’m still planning my cover attack anyway. He will pay. He will pay dearly. And as Satan’s Penguin is my witness, I will die grasping for September’s cover. And if some of those around me need to die in the process, so be it.
More website problems. I just don’t think Johnny has time to do it, but he’s got it so far done that I’m not sure anyone else can really jump in at this point. I’ll be glad when it’s up and running.
Tony sent an issue of a cool new Columbia mag called undefined. Can’t believe Columbia has a mag like this. It’s so well done. Hope they make it. They’re supposedly going to do something on Treadmill in April. Hopefully we can push that til September where it’ll do us some good.
Started practicing for this weeks rehearsals. This always happens, but I can’t seem to do anything but play Ohio and Cinnamon Girl over and over. I did try to practice the new songs, Hands Off and Least I’m Feeling. Least I’m Feeling was one of those songs that happened completely in the realm of recording. I went through a phase where I’d just sit down at the computer and write directly into Pro Tools. So, when I went to learn it- I realized that I can’t play it and sing it at the same time. It’s the same as the Charlie Brown theme on piano- since I was like 13 I’ve tried to play that, but can never get the left hand bass thing happening at the same time as the right hand part. It’s impossible! Anyway, awhile ago I went out drinking with Milton and one of his friends Van- who I really liked a lot. We started talking about songwriting (Van is a songwriter and records his stuff at home) and I was asking Van how he went about it. He said that he never sat down to record until the song was completely finished working it out. So I’ve adopted that practice. There’s something about recording stuff before it’s matured that hurts it. Like it’s missing some limbs or something. Plus, you lose focus on the song writing and get all caught up in finding the perfect sounds or whatever. I don’t know how many hundreds of hours I’ve wasted scrolling through high hat sounds trying to find the perfect one. It’s stupid. Now, I just use the same shit for everything- it’s not about the recording at all.
