Well - we had a great show last night. Full rock. The new songs went really well. Introduced the piano into our set- which we were a little nervous about, but it went well. And our biggest deal was pulling off a Queen medley as an encore, which was on par with Tusk as far as memorable treadmill moments go, for me anyway. I think we were all really surprised it worked. Very fun show. Friends came out from LA to check it out. Cool.
We’re now prepping for the Asheville Acoustic show- which I really do think is going to be pretty bad-ass. We had a rehearsal a month ago where we played acoustically, and it just really sounded great. We were all kind of blown away by it. I think alot of it has to do with Mike and his great backup vocals. It was the first time I really heard what he was up to. Plus, it’s great when the cello doesn’t have to fight with the cacophony. We’re doing the show in the Pilates studio, which is a really cool space. But it’s going to be weird for sure. In a good way, I think. No shoes are allowed in the studio and people are just going to be sitting on yoga mats on the floor drinking and listening. I’m looking forward to it. We’ve figured out a set list, and in addition to a few more new songs, we’re sort of planning on doing Thank You by Zep and Hey Jude as our encore covers. Tony said that I’m drunk with power after pulling off the Queen stuff. It is kind of dangerous to do covers like these, but I am drunk with power and I know we can pull them off. Anyway, I’m pretty sure that this show is going to go down in my memory banks as one of the coolest ever. Plus, I don’t have to drive for once. Total bonus.
In other news, we’ve started to really take a look at the logistics of getting this record done. Working out all of our schedules is an amazingly complicated task. Just trying to figure out rehearsing between now and October 25th took a conference call and gnashing of teeth. And there was only one weekend between now and then that we were all avail. The recording is going to be just as painful. I actually don’t see how it’s going to work at all. I’ve sort of been trying to schedule it, but in a second, I’m going to give up.
I think I’ve mentioned here before- we have sort of three acts of the record. Sort of 4 songs per act. Tony had the idea that we should record each act separately, which at first I didn’t like, because I really wanted to have consistency in the drums throughout the record... But finding 8 days we could all blow off our lives to hang at a studio is just not in the cards. So, I now love his idea. We plan on four different sessions of two days each. The first day of each session will be spent trying to get drums for sure on four songs and hopefully bass too. The second day will be finishing bass and hopefully getting some cello and guitar down too. As long as we get bass and drums, we’ll be good to go. We can finish the rest whenever. But, our next task is finding 3 sets of 2 days between now and january that we can all do this. It’s going to be gnarly.
The fund raising, what can I say? It’s huge. I really can not believe that folks have contributed to this thing. It is just completely mind blowing. We’re only a few hundred bucks from reaching our September goal, and I’m sure that we’ll hit it. Crazy.
